31/07/23, 21:00

Global Goal 17 made significant advancements in the training of PSHE (Physical, Social, Health, and Economic) learning through the PENDO programme in Kenya. By integrating PSHE into educational initiatives for partner schools, we equipped over 500 learners with the essential skills and knowledge to lead healthy, balanced, and responsible lives.

Physical Health Education:

We emphasise the importance of physical health as a foundational aspect of overall well-being. Our PSHE curriculum include:

- Regular physical activity and sports to promote fitness and health.

- Education on nutrition and healthy eating habits.

- Awareness of personal hygiene and preventive health care.

Social Development:

Our programme fosters social skills and emotional intelligence, helping children to interact positively with others. through a programme called 'Loving Classroom'.

Key elements included:

- Activities that encouraged teamwork, communication, and collaboration.

- Workshops on conflict resolution and empathy.

- Building self-esteem and confidence through group activities and mentoring.

The Loving Classroom programme

The programme has been developed over many years by founders David and Naomi Geffen - initially by running workshops on conflict resolution, which led to the realisation that delivering Positive Relationship Education in schools serving as early intervention and prevention of conflict in all its aspects. Loving Classroom was thus born - a bespoke programme, offering the best possible guidance for school students by training their staff. Through this programme, teachers and students cultivate loving classrooms:  excellent relationships in the classroom, that are a foundation for excellent relationships at home, the future workplace and hopefully between communities and nations.

Health Education:

We provided comprehensive health education to ensure that children understood how to take care of their bodies and minds. This involved:

- Information on physical and mental health, including stress management and emotional well-being.

- Education on sexual and reproductive health tailored to age-appropriate levels.

- Initiatives to promote mental health awareness and reduce stigma.

Our PSHE curriculum also includes economic education, preparing children for future financial independence and responsibility. This includes:

- Basic financial literacy, such as understanding money, savings, and budgeting.

- Introduction to entrepreneurship and the value of economic activities.

- Encouragement of practical skills that could lead to economic opportunities in the future.

Holistic Approach:

The integration of PSHE into our partner school's educational programmes creates a holistic learning environment. This approach ensures that:

- Children develop a balanced understanding of their physical, social, health, and economic well-being.

- Learners are better prepared to face real-world challenges with resilience and knowledge.

- A supportive network was built around students to guide them through their developmental stages.

Community Involvement:

We always involve community leaders, health professionals, and educators to deliver PSHE education effectively. This collaboration has:

- Strengthened  the community's role in supporting children's development.

- Ensured culturally sensitive and relevant information was provided.

- Enhanced the reach and impact of our PSHE initiatives.

Replicable Model:

The success of our PSHE learning in Kenya has showcased a scalable model that could be implemented in other regions. Our comprehensive approach has demonstrated that:

- PSHE education is crucial for holistic child development and can be adapted to various cultural contexts.

- Other regions could replicate our model to address their unique needs and challenges in PSHE education.

- A focus on PSHE learning can lead to healthier, more socially responsible, and economically aware individuals.

Personal Success Stories:

Children like Faith, Christian, and Clinton, again, have  benefited immensely from our PSHE curriculum. Faith became more confident in managing her health, Christian developed strong leadership skills, and Clinton gained valuable economic insights that has fueled his entrepreneurial spirit. These stories highlighted the transformative power of PSHE education in shaping well-rounded, informed, and capable individuals.

Future Aspirations:

Global Goal 17 remains committed to expanding our PSHE learning initiatives. With continued support, we aim to:

- Extend our PSHE curriculum to more regions, impacting more children.

- Advocate for the inclusion of comprehensive PSHE education in national curricula.

- Increase community partnerships to enhance the delivery and effectiveness of PSHE programmes.

The impact of Global Goal 17's PSHE learning initiatives is profound and far-reaching. By supporting over learners through the PENDO programme, we demonstrate that comprehensive PSHE education is essential for developing healthy, socially responsible, and economically informed individuals. Our commitment to protecting our children's privacy and fostering a holistic learning environment remained at the forefront of our mission as we worked to build a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
