Global Goal 17: Breaking Intergenerational Poverty Cycles through Education

Introduction

At Global Goal 17, we are dedicated to breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty through education. We provide children in need with access to quality education, empowering them to take control of their futures. Our scholarship-driven approach focuses on direct action, making a tangible difference in the lives of the children we support.

Our History

Global Goal 17 was founded in 2019 with a vision inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We are committed to contributing to the achievement of these goals by 2030. Our name reflects our dedication to SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), and we also prioritize SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 4 (Quality Education), and 10 (Reduced Inequalities). Our mission is to empower sustainable futures and end intergenerational poverty through equal education for all, one child scholarship at a time. We envision a world where every child has access to equal-quality education, breaking the cycle of poverty and fostering a sustainable future for all.

Our Charitable Objective

Global Goal 17 focuses on empowering children from underprivileged backgrounds, particularly those from families subsisting on less than 60% of the median income in their country of residence or from ethnic minority backgrounds. We achieve this through educational support and scholarships. Our charitable objectives strictly adhere to the guidelines set by the Charities and Trustee Investment (Scotland) Act 2005 and the Charities Act (Northern Ireland) 2008.

Our Projects:

PENDO: Partnership in Education for National Development Outcomes

One of our flagship programs is PENDO (Partnership in Education for National Development Outcomes), which exemplifies our collaborative approach. Through PENDO, we partner with local schools and grassroots community organizations in Kenya to support SDG Goals 1, 4, 10, and 17. This program embodies the spirit of collective action and shared commitment towards a sustainable future.

By providing direct scholarship support to underprivileged children, we help them access quality education and build a brighter future.

Charitable Purposes

Global Goal 17's charitable purposes are centred on taking direct action to empower children from underprivileged backgrounds through educational support and scholarships. This includes children from families earning less than 60% of the median income in their country and those from ethnic minority backgrounds.

What We Achieve

Our charity is set up to achieve general charitable purposes with a focus on education, training, and research. Specifically, we aim to advance education by providing bursaries, scholarships, grants, and other educational resources.

How We Achieve It

We achieve our goals by making grants to individuals and providing educational services. This includes funding for educational supplies, extra-curricular resources, and study costs for children who excel or need additional support due to financial constraints.

Who We Help

Our organization primarily helps children and young people, particularly those from families with an income of less than 60% of the median income in their country. We also focus on children from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Where We Operate

Global Goal 17 operates both within and outside of England and Wales. Our international focus includes countries such as Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, DRC Congo, and Southern Sudan.

Advancing Education

We aim to advance education in all subjects within the national curriculum of each country we operate in, with a particular focus on Maths, Language, Sciences, and Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education. We also emphasize environmental and sustainable practices.

Ensuring Quality Education

Our trustees ensure that all those providing education are suitably qualified. Schools, tutors, and teachers are fully qualified, registered, and have undergone safeguarding training and background checks.

Carrying Out Our Purpose

Global Goal 17 provides scholarship opportunities to children from underprivileged backgrounds. We have a network of volunteers and committees in various countries that connect with schools and communities to identify and support potential beneficiaries. Our selection criteria for scholarships include family income, the child's natural talents or struggles due to financial stresses, and ethnic background.

Benefits of Our Purpose

The primary benefit of our purpose is increasing access to education for children who might otherwise miss out. By funding and supporting their education, we provide them with opportunities to succeed and break the cycle of poverty.

Overseas Aid

Global Goal 17 addresses educational needs in overseas locations through scholarships for educational resources, materials, and fees. We work with local partners such as schools and churches to identify and support beneficiaries, ensuring funds are used effectively for educational purposes.

Monitoring and Accountability

We have formal agreements with our partners, including Memorandums of Understanding, to ensure transparency and accountability. Schools and churches report back on the impact of the educational support provided.

Conclusion

At Global Goal 17, we believe that education is the key to a sustainable future. By providing scholarships and educational support to underprivileged children, we are breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering the next generation to thrive. Our commitment to the United Nations SDGs and our collaborative approach ensures that we make a lasting impact in the communities we serve. Together, we can create a world where every child has the opportunity to succeed through education.
